After a long road to recovery, Lance McCullers Jr. tasted victory again. The Houston Astros right-hander pitched six near-perfect innings, outdueled one of MLB's most promising arms, Paul Skenes, and led his team to a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In a pitching-dominated duel, the Astros held on to key hits and a reliable bullpen to take the first game of the series.
McCullers Breaks Drought With Total Dominance
Tuesday night had a special flavor for Lance McCullers Jr. The Astros pitcher hadn't won a game since September 2022, after dealing with multiple injuries that kept him off the mound for nearly two years. In his sixth start since his return, he finally found his groove and showed why he remains a valuable piece for Houston.
McCullers worked six innings without allowing runs, gave up just two hits, gave up one base on balls and struck out seven opponents. His control was impeccable, his command over breaking pitches looked sharp and, above all, he kept his cool in the few moments of pressure. It was a solid outing, backed by an orderly defense and an efficient game plan from the mound.
McCullers' comeback has been gradual, and this performance represents an important step towards consolidating him once again as one of the trusted starters in the rotation. After the game, the pitcher himself admitted that this victory means a lot on a personal level, and thanked the coaching staff for keeping faith in his recovery process.
Skenes Delivers, But Fails to Comply
Leading the way was Paul Skenes, a young Pirates pitcher who continues to surprise with his consistency this season. Although the loss fell on his shoulders, his performance was commendable: eight innings of work, only three hits allowed, one run, one base on balls and eight strikeouts.
Skenes came into the game with enviable effectiveness and once again proved that he can compete at the highest level. His only error came against Christian Walker, who hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie. The hit, on the first pitch of the inning, was all Houston needed to take the lead.
Interestingly, despite having pitched at least eight innings three times in his young career, the Pirates have lost all three of those games. A stat that reflects the lack of offensive support Skenes has faced, which was again evident against the Astros.
Timely and Accurate Timber Astros
Houston's offense was not blistering, but it was efficient. Christian Walker opened the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning and, two innings later, Isaac Paredes sealed the victory with a two-run homer off reliever Dennis Santana.
Walker reached eight home runs on the season, while Paredes added his 12th. Both have been key figures in the team's offense over the last month, and once again responded in a game where every run was worth gold.
In addition, Parker Meadows returned to action and was another standout. The outfielder had two hits and scored three times, showing good physical shape after recovering from an arm injury. His presence brings speed and dynamism to the lower part of the batting order.
Bullpen Closes With Authority
After McCullers' work, the Astros bullpen didn't miss a beat. Shawn Dubin, Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader closed out the game with one inning each. Hader, in particular, earned his 16th save in as many opportunities this season, cementing himself as one of the best closers in 2024.
The Astros thus added their sixth shutout of the year and improved their recent record to seven wins in the last nine games. The team seems to have found stability in a season that began with some doubts, especially in its rotation.
For their part, the Pirates suffered their tenth shutout in just 61 games. A fact that evidences the offensive difficulties they have faced, even when their starters, such as Skenes, offer quality starts.

What's Next
The series continues today with another rookie pitcher's duel. Ryan Gusto (3-2, 4.62 ERA) will open for the Astros, while the Pirates will send Mike Burrows (0-1, 8.64 ERA) to the mound. Both will look to make a difference and help their respective teams continue their regular season run.
For now, the Astros are celebrating the return to form of Lance McCullers Jr. a long-awaited return that could have a major impact on the fight for the top of the American League West.
