Marchán Responds in a Big Way as Phillies Remain Unstoppable Against Braves

|

With an outstanding performance both with the bat and behind the plate, Rafael Marchán became the unexpected hero for the Philadelphia Phillies, who overcame the Atlanta Braves 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. The young backup catcher took advantage of his opportunity in the absence of Bryce Harper, who did not see action after being hit by a ball a few days earlier, and responded with a two-run home run, drove in the winning run after being hit with the bases loaded, and thwarted two steal attempts that made the difference.

The win represents the 23rd victory in the last 29 games for the Phillies, who remain solid at the top of the National League East. Atlanta, meanwhile, continues its free fall with its sixth loss in seven games.

Marchán Seizes the limelight

Rarely does a relief catcher impact a game as much as Rafael Marchan did on Thursday. With Bryce Harper out of the lineup and a doubleheader to play, the Venezuelan not only delivered, but excelled in every aspect.

In the third inning, Marchan struck first with a two-run homer that opened the scoring and ignited the Phillies offense. Later in the eighth, with the game tied, he stood in the box with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch that pushed across the go-ahead run. While it wasn't the most traditional way to tow, it was just as effective and decisive.

Defensively, he also made a difference. In the fourth inning, he caught Stuart Fairchild stealing for the last out, and repeated the dose in the ninth against Ozzie Albies, when Atlanta was desperate to tie the game. His arm was a wall, and his presence at the plate provided security for the pitching staff.

Phillies Resolve Without Harper

The concern was evident when it was confirmed that Bryce Harper would not be available for the first game of the day. The slugger was coming off starting the first 54 games of the year, but he was hit in the right elbow with a 95 mph straight on Tuesday and the team preferred not to risk it.

Without its star, Philadelphia needed others to raise their hand, and they did. Kyle Schwarber connected for his 19th home run of the season in the seventh inning off Pierce Johnson, a blast that extended the lead to 4-2. Trea Turner was also key with an infield single that plated a run.

From the mound, Freddy Peralta worked five innings, allowing three runs and six hits, in addition to striking out six. Although it was not his best outing of the year, he managed to keep the team in contention before handing the job to the bullpen.

Jose Ruiz (1-0) got the win by getting an important out in the eighth inning with a runner in scoring position. Jordan Romano, although he faltered in the ninth by giving out three tickets, ended up closing the game with a strikeout for his eighth save of the year.

Atlanta Cannot Lift its Head

The Braves started with energy and connected first with a Ceddane Rafaela home run in the second inning. Later, a run-producing single by Sean Murphy and an RBI by Ronald Acuña Jr. kept them in the fight.

However, it wasn't all good news for Atlanta. Their starter AJ Smith-Shawver had to leave the game in the third inning with right elbow discomfort, a blow that set off alarm bells on the coaching staff. The young right-hander had already taken a ball to the ankle on a Bryson Stott hit and, although he continued, appeared to say "pop" to manager Brian Snitker before exiting.

Fairchild, meanwhile, left the game after apparently hurting a finger on his right hand during a slide. Acuña Jr. entered in his place and finished with two hits and a run, but it was not enough to prevent the team from falling again.

Beyond The Scoreboard

The duel had several key moments that tipped the scales. Schwarber's home run was certainly one of them, giving the Phillies a lead at a critical moment. Another was the relief of Jose Ruiz, who snuffed out a threat in the eighth.

But perhaps the most symbolic was the performance of Marchán, a player who is not used to making headlines, but who stole the show on Thursday. His performance was a sign of the good collective moment the Phillies are experiencing, where any player seems to be ready to contribute.

With this win, Philadelphia continues to establish itself as one of the most solid teams in the league, while Atlanta continues to look for answers to get out of its slump.

What's Next

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Braves sent left-hander Chris Sale to the mound, while the Phillies relied on Zack Wheeler, one of their most reliable arms. Both pitchers were protagonists in last season's Cy Young battle, so a high-level duel was expected.

Regardless of the outcome of the second meeting, the first game made it clear that Philadelphia has depth, character and players ready to take the lead when needed. A team that, even without its most important figure, continues to find ways to win.
