Club Brugge put in a great performance on their visit to Italy with a 3-1 win over Atalanta to secure their place in the next round of the European competition. With a first half of absolute efficiency, the Belgian team took the lead and then managed to handle the pressure in the second half. Atalanta had opportunities to react, but a lack of precision, a missed penalty and a sending-off in the final minutes sealed their elimination.
The match started with intense pressure from the home side, but Brugge was solid and knew how to take advantage of every mistake made by their opponents. Talbi and Jutglá were the main protagonists of the night, punishing an Italian defense that left too many spaces. Although Atalanta showed a different attitude in the second half with the introduction of Lookman, his effort was not enough to turn the score around.
Club Brugge Strikes Early And Disarms Atalanta
From the outset, the Belgian team showed that it had no intention of speculating with the result. After just three minutes, Jutglá found a perfect pass for Chemsdine Talbi, who scored with precision in front of Carnesecchi. The goal silenced the stadium and set the tone for the match.
Atalanta tried to react with possession and high pressing, but Brugge stood firm in defense and waited for the right moment to attack. In the 27th minute, another fast counterattack left the Italian team in a bad position. Carnesecchi managed to block a powerful shot from Tzolis, but the rebound fell to Talbi, who unchallenged pushed the ball into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Gian Piero Gasperini's side continued to look for an equalizer and had clear chances. First with a shot by Zappacosta that hit the post and then with a double attempt by Pasalic and Cuadrado, which were blocked on the line by the Belgian defense.
However, Brugge's response was lethal. On the counter from that same move, Jutglá received space and unleashed a left-footed shot that Carnesecchi could not handle, making it 3-0 just before halftime.
Lookman Gives Hope, But Atalanta Squanders Its Chance
In the second half, Gasperini decided to make changes and brought on Lookman, who had just recovered from injury. His impact was immediate, as after 40 seconds he took advantage of a pass from Zappacosta and scored to make it 3-1.
The goal boosted Atalanta's confidence and they stepped up their attack. In the 60th minute, the VAR reviewed a foul by Tzolis on Cuadrado and ruled a penalty for the home side. Lookman took the responsibility, but his shot was weak and Mignolet managed to save it, thwarting the comeback.
The Italian team did not give up and had more chances with shots from Retegui and Lookman, but again Mignolet responded safely. Atalanta's desperation was reflected in the 87th minute, when Toloi was shown the red card after assaulting De Cuyper with the game stopped. That action put an end to any attempt at a reaction and sealed Brugge's qualification.

A Historic Win For Club Brugge
With this victory, the Belgian team shows that it is ready to compete at the highest level in the Champions League. Their effectiveness in the first half and their solid defense were key to eliminating an opponent that had been one of the revelations of the tournament.
For Atalanta, the elimination leaves a bitter taste, as they generated many scoring chances, but failed to put them away. The penalty missed by Lookman and defensive errors were decisive in their farewell to the tournament.
Brugge now awaits an opponent in the round of 16, confident of having passed a tough test in Bergamo. Their attacking trident, led by Jutglá, Talbi and Tzolis, has proven to be a constant threat and will be looking to continue to surprise in the next stage of the tournament.
