The power of Julio Rodriguez and the accuracy of Luis Castillo combined perfectly on Monday to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Seattle kept their positive momentum going with their fourth straight win, in a game that remained close until Rodriguez broke things open with a big hit in the eighth.
Seattle took advantage of their momentum with a timely offense and a quality start by their Dominican starter. Meanwhile, the White Sox were unable to find their rhythm and added their fifth loss in a row, despite a good start by their pitcher Davis Martin.
Julio Rodriguez Changes The Game With A Swing
The key moment of the game came in the eighth inning, when Julio Rodríguez hit a grand slam with the bases loaded to give the Mariners a definitive lead. The Dominican outfielder appeared in the most expected at-bat and did not disappoint. With this hit, he added his second grand slam in the Major Leagues and finished the game with a run scored and four RBIs.
Before that inning, the game was close. Seattle was leading by the minimum, 1-0, and it seemed that an error or a timely hit could change the story. But J-Rod, with his power and mettle, ended up defining everything with a long drive to left field, igniting the crowd and securing the victory.
These types of plays are expected from a figure like Rodriguez, who is gradually establishing himself as one of the offensive references in the American League. His presence at the plate represents a constant threat to opposing pitchers, and this Monday was more than demonstrated.
Luis Castillo Takes Over The Mound
While the offense waited for its moment, Luis Castillo was in charge of keeping Chicago's bats silent. The Dominican right-hander was in total control throughout seven innings, in which he allowed just three hits, no tickets and five strikeouts.
One of the highlights of his performance was his efficiency. Of his 94 pitches, 64 were strikes, showing a mastery of control and the strike zone. Castillo retired the last 14 batters he faced, sealing one of his most complete outings of the season.
With this performance, the Dominican earned his first win since April 26, a streak he was undoubtedly eager to break. In addition, he reaffirmed his good record against the White Sox, since in four starts against that team he accumulated a 2-0 record with a 1.71 ERA.
These types of outings give confidence not only to the coaching staff, but also to the rest of the team. Knowing that Castillo can be that dominant arm needed in close games strengthens Seattle's aspirations to stay in the fight in their division.
White Sox Fight, But It's Not Enough
Chicago had one of the few good news stories of the day in Davis Martin. The right-handed pitcher had the longest opening of his career by working seven and one-third innings, in which he allowed just four hits. However, the reliever could not hold the slim lead when the game tightened up in the eighth.
Cam Booser entered with a runner on base and failed to contain the Seattle offense. He allowed a walk to J.P. Crawford, then a single by Mitch Garver as a pinch-hitter, and finally faced Rodriguez, who changed everything with his at-bat. Chicago's relievers have been inconsistent throughout the season, and this time was no exception.
Offensively, the White Sox were limited to only three hits in the entire game. Luis Robert Jr. was one of the few who managed to connect a hit, while his Cuban teammates Miguel Vargas and Luis Robert Jr. could not contribute at the necessary moment. Chicago cannot find answers and remains in last place in its division, with a negative streak that continues unabated.

Mariners Stay On Fire And Look For More
With this win, the Mariners add their fourth consecutive victory and remain firmly in the fight for the division lead. The team has found a good balance between pitching and offense, which is reflected in the results. Players such as J.P. Crawford, Jorge Polanco and Rodriguez himself have contributed consistently, while the pitching staff has been solid.
Seattle looks to keep up this good pace in the series against Chicago and then continue to rack up wins on the road. Although there is still a long way to go in the season, this streak can set the team's direction heading into the summer.
The Mariners have shown that they have talent on both sides of the ball. If they can maintain consistency, it would not be unusual to see them in direct contention for a postseason berth.
