The New York Mets had an unforgettable day by crushing the Washington Nationals 19-5, but the great protagonist was Brandon Nimmo, who tied a franchise record by driving in nine runs in a single game. With a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, and a total of four hits, Nimmo led the offense of a team that continues to demonstrate that it is going through one of its best moments of the season.
A Performance That Will Go Down in the Books
Brandon Nimmo had been going through a rough patch at the plate, but he had a dream night at Nationals Park on Monday. The 32-year-old outfielder, who began the day with a batting average of just .192, pounded out four hits, including a three-run homer and a grand slam, to tie the Mets' record for most RBIs in a game, a mark set by Carlos Delgado in 2008.
His first home run came in the sixth inning, when he connected on a 2-0 straight fly by Colin Poche that sailed over the right-center field wall, breaking a tie on the scoreboard and unleashing the New York offense. Later, in the seventh inning, Nimmo responded again with the bases loaded, sending another ball out of the park in front of Cole Henry. To close out his historic performance, he hit a two-run double in the eighth inning.
In addition to his hits, Nimmo scored four times and was a key player for New York to finish the game with 21 total hits, in an offensive festival that the crowd in attendance will not easily forget.
Mets Continue to Rise
The crushing victory over the Nationals not only helped the Mets split the four-game series, but also consolidated their great momentum in the season. With the win, New York has won nine of its last eleven games, raising its overall record to 20-9, the best in the Major Leagues so far.
The offensive production was not limited to Nimmo alone. Jeff McNeil, who recently returned from an injury that kept him out 25 games, hit his first home run of the year in the fifth inning. Mark Vientos also joined the party with a three-run homer in the ninth inning to sink the Nationals, who could no longer find answers.
On the mound, Griffin Canning kept Washington's bats at bay for five innings, allowing just four hits and earning his fourth consecutive victory. Jose Urena, who was making his Mets debut, secured the save despite allowing five runs in three innings of relief.
A Rival That Could Never React
The Washington Nationals showed few resources to stop the visiting offense. Their starter, Trevor Williams, managed to stay in the game until the sixth inning, but ended up allowing five runs, his worst outing so far this year. After that, the bullpen was unable to contain the Mets' gale.
Despite the wide difference in the score, Washington managed some runs in the eighth inning thanks to solo home runs by James Wood and Nathaniel Lowe. However, the damage had already been done and they posed no real threat to change the course of the game.
Infielder Amed Rosario ended up pitching in the ninth inning due to the lack of arms in the Nationals' bullpen, a situation that made clear the lack of control suffered by the home team in the final stretch of the game.

The Road Ahead for Both Teams
After such an explosive night, the New York Mets will look to keep their winning pace when they start a new series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Left-hander David Peterson will be in charge of opening the first game, trying to keep adding wins for his team.
For their part, the Nationals will have to turn the page quickly. They will begin a tough three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, with MacKenzie Gore as their starter in the first game. Washington needs to find answers if they want to stop a streak that threatens to take them out of contention in their division.
Brandon Nimmo's performance will go down as one of the shining moments of this season, not only for the Mets, but for all of MLB. A game that reminded everyone why baseball, with its magical nights, remains so special to those who love the sport.
