The Oklahoma City Thunder are just one win away from returning to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012. This Monday, in a vibrant and tension-filled duel, they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-126 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.
The undisputed star was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who offered an outstanding performance with 40 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, reaffirming why he was chosen as the Most Valuable Player. It was a game full of emotion, where every possession counted, and where the Thunder's character ended up making the difference.
A Champion's Response After a Hard Fall
The Thunder came into this game with the pressure of having to react after a tough loss in Game 3, where they were outscored by 42 points. Far from getting carried away by the blow, the Oklahoma City team showed admirable mental toughness and responded with one of its best games so far in the playoffs.
From the start, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander imposed his rhythm, scoring 13 points in the first quarter along with Jalen Williams, who also had an electric start. OKC took an early lead and, although Minnesota kept the score tight with the contribution of its second unit, the visitors went to the break with an eight-point lead and the feeling of being in control.
Defense was also key in this start. Luguentz Dort led the pressure on Anthony Edwards, who only managed to score four points in the first half. Julius Randle was also well contained, which limited the impact of the Wolves' starters. It was a start that set the tone for the game.
Shai Shines And Leads In A Heart-Stopping Close
The last quarter was a spectacle apart. With the score always tight, Oklahoma City showed cold blood in the hottest moments. Gilgeous-Alexander took control of the game again, scoring 11 points in that stretch alone and dishing out a fantasy assist - passing the ball under his defender's legs as he slid on the floor - that ended in a three-pointer by Jalen Williams.
Along with Williams, who scored 34 points with a great effectiveness from the perimeter (6 of 9 in three-pointers), and Chet Holmgren, who added 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, Shai was part of a trio that scored 34 of the team's 38 points in the last period. It was an impressive offensive display, not only by quantity, but by momentum and efficiency.
Minnesota pushed until the end. With Nickeil Alexander-Walker (23 points) and Donte DiVincenzo (21 points) lighting it up off the bench, they managed to stay in the game until the final seconds. Anthony Edwards also showed up in the close, albeit lacking the sparkle of other nights, and had the last chance to tie it from the free throw line with 3.5 seconds to play.
OKC's plan was to intentionally foul him. Edwards dunked the first and missed the second on purpose, hoping for a quick rebound. However, Gilgeous-Alexander grabbed the rebound and threw the ball out of bounds to eat up the clock. With just 0.3 seconds on the clock, the Timberwolves could not avoid defeat.
A Giant Step Toward The Finals
This win puts the Thunder with a 3-1 series lead and the possibility of sealing their ticket to the Finals at home this Wednesday. It is an ideal scenario for a young team that has shown maturity, courage and a clear identity based on collective play and the leadership of its star.
The victory not only means a statistical advantage, it also hits the morale of a Timberwolves that now need to win three consecutive games, two of them as visitors, to rebound. In its playoff history, Minnesota has never managed to reverse a 1-3 series, which leaves the Thunder with the wind at their backs.
Defense will be a key factor in closing out the series. In this Game 4, they were able to limit Edwards and Randle to just 21 points combined, thanks to constant pressure and the intensity of their scorers. If that formula is repeated in Oklahoma City, a Finals berth could be a matter of time.

The Moment of Truth
This OKC team has grown by leaps and bounds. Just a few years ago they were in the midst of a rebuild, and today they are one win away from playing for the title. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is establishing himself as one of the best players in the league, Jalen Williams is still on the rise and Chet Holmgren proves every night why he was such a big bet on the team.
Game 5 will be a test of character: closing the series at home in front of their fans, avoiding unnecessary risks, will be key to reach the Finals with momentum and confidence. Minnesota, for its part, will have to look for quick and efficient answers if it wants to prolong this story.
For now, the Thunder have responded to every challenge with play, heart and a cool head. They are on the verge of something big. And they have everything to make it happen.
